Day -1

5 May

Preparing for a trip to Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan is not for the faint hearted. It’s my first time with Wild Frontiers and a special treat in the year of my 40th birthday.  Smallest group ever – 6 people and a UK tour guide.

Three visas needed.  Two obtained. Iranian visa took at least 2 months. Azerbaijan visa obtained electronically. Turkmenistan letter of invitation in my possession.  Hopefully it’ll be enough to get me on the flight and a visa on arrival at Ashgabat airport.

My challenges for this trip, if we exclude the fact that I couldn’t seem to book a flight that didn’t get cancelled, was to pack everything I want to take into the requested 20kg.

Looking forward to camping at the Darvaza gas crater, meeting the Iranian people, trying a camel curry, hiking in the Alborz mountains and boating on the Caspian Sea.

If you want to follow along …
