Day 12 – Mavrovo to Ohrid

1 Oct

Waking up to 9°C is a bit unusual on this trip.  However as we are now in the mountain ski resort of Mavrovo, I’ve had to don a long sleeved t-shirt.

A brief walk after breakfast revealed how seasonal the place is. The local dogs became very protective of me, although they were all obviously wild. Might have remembered the biscuit from yesterday.  A woman shouting at a cow wandered down the street.

A rather panicing Georgio in reception revealed that the hotel internet connection had failed at 3am.

We started our long drive of the day. The first stop was at a small town called Debar. Tom checked the guide book and whilst others wandered off to be disappointed, we headed straight to the recommended coffee shop. Despite smoking inside being illegal, the place was full of it. Sitting outside was the only choice. Just as I commented that this wasn’t a horse and cart country, two turned up.

Moving on we had a brief stop at the dam  / hydro power station on the Black Drini river which powers most of the country.  We also stopped for some rather scenic photos over Lake Debar.
